Households are being encouraged to try an unexpected but effective method to tackle a common pest, by leaving a piece of bread in a glass jar overnight. The advice, which has circulated among pest control experts and home maintenance guides, is aimed at helping people get rid of silverfish, small silvery insects that thrive in dark, damp corners of the home.
The method involves placing a piece of bread, or any starchy food, inside a clean glass jar. The outside of the jar is then wrapped with tape or another textured material, allowing the insects to climb up the surface and enter the container. Once inside, the silverfish are unable to escape, as their feet cannot adhere to the smooth glass interior.
Silverfish, or Lepisma saccharina, are not actually fish but wingless insects. They get their name from their shimmering, metallic colouring and the fish-like way they move, quick, agile and side-to-side.
These nocturnal creatures are most often found in humid environments such as bathrooms, kitchens and basements, where they can remain hidden during the day and active at night.
Part of what makes silverfish so persistent is their diet. They feed on polysaccharides, sugary substances found in a wide range of household items including paper, book bindings, glue, fabric, paint, and even some carpets and furniture.
They can live for up to eight years and reproduce throughout their lifetime, meaning that even a few unnoticed insects can quickly lead to an infestation if left unchecked.
While silverfish are not dangerous to humans and do not spread disease, they can cause gradual but costly damage to household materials.
Their constant nibbling can ruin books, clothing and wallpaper, and their presence is often a sign of excessive moisture in the home.
Experts recommend using the bread-in-a-jar trick as a simple, chemical-free way to identify and trap these pests. However, prevention is equally important.
Reducing humidity, improving ventilation and sealing cracks or gaps where the insects might hide can help prevent them from returning. Storing dry goods in airtight containers and keeping surfaces clean and dry also makes a big difference.
Silverfish thrive in moisture and darkness, so tackling those two factors is key to keeping them away for good. But for those who prefer an easy home remedy, a slice of bread in a taped glass jar may be all it takes to capture these elusive household invaders.
