Knee Problems In Women: Knee problems occur in both men and women, but research has shown that women are two to eight times more likely than men to suffer knee injuries, such as ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries, osteoarthritis, and patellofemoral pain syndrome. According to WebMD, research has found that 1 in 10 female college athletes suffers a serious knee injury (usually an ACL tear) each year, a rate five to six times higher than that of men. This is also common among women who play common sports; one study found that women have a nearly five times greater risk of serious knee ligament injury than men.
What is the ACL?
The ACL is one of the four main ligaments in the knee. It connects the thighbone and shinbone and controls movements like sudden stops and changes of direction. It is susceptible to injury in sports like football, basketball, tennis, and soccer. ACL injuries often occur without a collision. Injuries often result in sharp pain, a "pop" sound, swelling, and knee weakness.
Why are women more likely to have knee problems?
There are three main reasons: anatomy, biomechanics (gait and movement), and hormones.
Anatomy: Women often have larger hips than men, and their knees tend to bend inward (knock-kneed). This posture puts more strain on the ACL. The tissue material of the ACL is thinner in women, making it more prone to injury.
Biomechanics: Women often land with their feet straight, keeping their knees straight and engaging their core muscles less. This puts more strain on the knees than in men.
Muscle balance: In women, the quadriceps (front thigh muscles) are often stronger than the hamstrings (back muscles). This imbalance puts additional stress on the knees, especially during high-impact exercises.
How Women Can Protect Themselves –
Women can take certain precautions to reduce knee problems, such as:
Strength training and neuromuscular training.
Low-impact exercises like walking, yoga, or cycling.
Maintaining a healthy weight.
Eating a balanced diet and maintaining a proper fitness routine.
Some other treatment options:
A complete ACL tear does not heal on its own.
Weight control, strength training, and physical therapy can help with mild injuries.
NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or hyaluronic acid injections may be given to reduce pain.
Severe cases may require surgery, such as arthroscopy, ligament repair, or total knee replacement.
It has been proven that the causes of knee injuries in women are different, but these problems can be prevented by adopting proper precautions, exercise, and lifestyle. With timely consultation with a doctor and proper treatment, you can keep your knees strong throughout your life and live a quality life.
